The Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department and Sea Island Bank will present Bulloch County's annual Fourth of July celebration — the 2009 Firecracker Fest. The patriotic party is set for Saturday at Mill Creek Regional Park from 4-11 p.m.
The free event includes plenty of amusement games, music, community exhibitions, as well as the traditional Frog Jumping Contest and the Subway Sub Eating Contest.
If you plan on participating in the Frog Jumping Contest, please bring your own frog. For the finale, Briggs and Stratton will sponsor the firework show, which will take place at 9 p.m. and is set to music and simulcast on AM 1240.
From 4-7 p.m. 300 Miles, an alternative rock band from Emanuel County, will open the stage. They will perform a variety of music including both classic and alternative rock, along with selections of their own originals. They have performed at various venues and events including the 2008 Firecracker Fest and the 2008 Tybee Island Pirate Festival.
At 7:30 p.m. on Field 1, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs will take their place on the stage, performing music with a combined energy of both rhythm-and-blues and rock'n roll. The group is most commonly remembered for their song “Stay”, which was written by Maurice Williams in 1960 and made popular in the 1987 movie, “Dirty Dancing.”
The Firecracker Fest has been a Statesboro tradition for many years and has been sponsored by Sea island Bank for more than 15 years.
“The Firecracker Fest is a great event for people of all ages in our community,” Chad Avret, operations division manager for SBCPRD, said. “We are happy to carry on this Statesboro tradition with the help of Sea Island Bank and our other sponsors.” Event sponsors include: Sea Island Bank, Briggs and Stratton, Kiwanis Club of Statesboro, Subway, Amerigroup, Chick-fil-A, Coca-Cola, Franklin Chevrolet and Franklin Toyota.
