Special to the Herald
An Adopt a Bear event to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training Program will be held on Saturday, July 12th, at the Statesboro Mall from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Alanna Eubanks, a Statesboro native, has joined the Team In Training program and will be training to run a marathon while raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
The public is invited to come out and support her fund-raising efforts by adopting a bear. Each bear comes with its very own personalized adoption certificate created and printed on site. Bears range from $5-$6 and 100 percent of the proceeds will go towards The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team in Training Program. General donations will also be accepted and greatly appreciated.
Team In Training is the largest endurance sports team in the world and has seen over 340,000 participants cross the finish line of their half/full marathon, century bike ride or triathlon. Remarkably, they have raised more than $800 million for lifesaving cancer research to help blood cancer patients live longer, better lives. This year Team In Training will be celebrating their 20th anniversary.
Facts about Leukemia and Lymphoma:
• In 2007, over 135,000 people in the U.S. were diagnosed with blood-related cancers
• There are currently over 820,000 people in the U.S. living with a blood-related cancer
• The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is fighting for each of these patients and their families
• The Society has come a long way. … The five-year survival for leukemia in 1987 was less than 55 percent and is now at 95 percent.
• Lymphoma has gone from 31 percent to 64 percent
• Myeloma has gone from 12 percent to nearly 34 percent
• The leukemia death rate for children from 0-14 years in the U.S. has declined about 70 percent over the past three decades.
• Despite this decline, leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under age 20.
• In 2007, about 515 children under the age of 14 are expected to die from leukemia.
This has all been possible due to the money raised by The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
In honor of Team in Trainings 20th Anniversary, the LLS hopes to reach the $1 billion mark.
Eubanks is joining her fourth season with Team In Training and is training and fund raising for The Women’s Nike Marathon in San Francisco this October. She has set a goal to raise $20,000 to honor the 20th-year anniversary of Team In Training.
