A 3-year-old Statesboro boy struck by a vehicle Saturday night is in stable condition, said Georgia State Patrol Sr. Trooper Brock Scott.
The child suffered a lung injury and a head injury after being struck by a vehicle leaving the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair around 9 p.m. Saturday, he said.
The boy's parents were crossing Ga. 67 in a place that "wasn't a crosswalk," he said. They had the 3-year-old and a 6-year-old child with them.
As they were crossing the highway through heavy traffic, heading towards the fairgrounds, the toddler suddenly darted away from them into the path of a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old male who was just leaving the fairgrounds, Scott said.
The vehicle struck the child and tossed him into the roadway before coming to a controlled stop on the shoulder. The teen driver was "shaken up" and very upset about striking the child, he said.
The driver had not been speeding, having not had enough time from leaving the fairgrounds to gather much speed at all, according to Scott. He was not charged.
The child suffered serious injuries, and was taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center before being transferred to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, he said.
The reason the child was taken to the Savannah hospital was concern about the lung injury, and he was "placed under observation by a pulmonary surgeon," he said.
However, Scott said the child was "conscious and alert" and in stable condition.
