When Jodie Hendrix arrived at the Kiwanis-Ogeechee Fairgrounds at 4:45 a.m. Saturday to make final preparations for the Statesboro Service League Attic Sale, she wasn’t the first one to arrive.
“People were already lined up ready to get in,” said Hendrix, chairperson of this year’s sale. “I asked them if they were ready to shop and they all said they were.”
Those customers braved the cold temperatures for a few hours before the doors opened at 7 a.m., but once inside, they found plenty of items that appeared to fit their needs, Hendrix said.
Approximately two hours later, nearly half of the merchandise was sold and organizers decided to charge half price for the remainder of the sale.
“We’ve had about what I expected, maybe a little bit more,” said Hendrix.
Among the first things to be sold were baby items, furniture and outdoor toys, she said.
The attic sale is the only fundraiser done by the Statesboro Service League. Proceeds from the sale remain in Bulloch County and support such groups as the Boys and Girls Club, Safe Haven and Joseph’s Home for Boys and others.
Carolyn Canty was one of the hundreds of customers at the sale. She said she was “just looking” and wanted to see what they had.
Canty said this was her first time ever going to the sale and she found a Christmas tree that she decided to buy.
Jeff Myatt and his wife, Leslie, were also on hand, looking for bargains. Leslie Myatt said she’d been to the sale before, but this was the first time for her husband.
Saturday was also Lisa Faber’s first time attending the attic sale and she said she found a lot of bargains.
“I just wanted to come and see what was here,” she said. “They’ve got some good buys and I like the size of it. It’s a big yard sale.”
Faber’s only complaint was that shopping carts weren’t available for her to carry her items.
“I’m running out of hands,” she said.
Organizers were hoping to raise $30,000.
