At Tuesday's Statesboro City Council meeting, a new man will take his seat as head administrator for the city.
Announced at the last meeting, R. Shane Haynes will start Tuesday as Statesboro’s newest city manager, a position vacated by former manager George Wood in March and two interim managers.
Haynes has a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management and a Masters of Public Administration, both obtained at Georgia Southern University.
“I’m very proud of being a graduate of Georgia Southern. I met my wife while we were both at school there,” said Haynes.
In fact, Haynes’ said his wife’s family lives in Statesboro, so when the opportunity arose to return here, they jumped at the chance.
“There are those places…you identify that you would enjoy being a part of,” said Haynes. “Statesboro for us has always been a place that we wanted to come back to.
“Statesboro for me is very much a second home.”
When the announcement was made, Mayor Bill Hatcher and all the councilmen expressed their confidence in Haynes ability and expressed their interest in working with the new manager.
Past positions held by Haynes include Deputy Tax Commissioner for Bulloch County, city administrator of Springfield, GA and city manager of Hardeeville, SC – a position he vacates to come to Statesboro. In addition, Haynes was an intern at the city while Hal Averitt was mayor and Carter Crawford was city manager.
Averitt and Carter Crawford both “really allowed me open access to their offices and their minds,” said Haynes. “I wound up doing my internship at Statesboro. I knew then after that I wanted to be involved in local government.”
The council meeting takes place at City Hall on the second floor and begins at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend.
