As the Georgia General Assembly’s 2007 session winds down, so does the career of Bill Golden, Georgia Southern University’s longtime director of governmental relations.
Golden, who announced he would retire this year, has served higher education for more than 48 years.
He attended Middle Georgia College, and earned his B.S. and M.S. Degrees from the University of Georgia and a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University;
Golden taught agricultural economics on the faculties of Clemson and UGA, and went on to head up UGA’s regional extension office, from which he retired in 1989. He then quickly launched his second career at Georgia Southern, starting out as the head of corporate fundraising, and then taking on the university’s governmental relations duties.
Resolutions were adopted in both the Georgia House and Senate recently honoring Golden for his service to the state. Speaking before House, Golden called it a “very humbling experience.”
“I want you to know that I hold this body in the highest esteem,” Golden said, adding, with his characteristic wit, that the sooner the representatives wrap up this year’s session, “the sooner I can retire.”
Rep. Bob Lane (R-Statesboro), in introducing the honorary resolution, noted that Golden “has been a tremendous asset for Georgia Southern University as their representative and spokesman, and also for the University System.
“We’ve worked on many, many issues together concerning Georgia Southern, and I’ve learned to respect his values and what he stands for, and he’s just a true professional in every sense of the word. He’s been a good friend and I’m going to miss him,” Lane said.
