A 24-hour recycling center was unveiled at the Statesboro Wal-Mart this past Monday in a joint effort with Keep Bulloch Beautiful.
Located between the Murphy's gas station and the south side of the store, the unmanned bins will allow residents to recycle plastic, metal cans, and paper products. The new center is part of an initiative by local Wal-Mart employees to increase their store-wide sustainability.
Clint Haynes, co-manager of Wal-Mart, said the management and employees were very supportive of the idea.
"I really think we need to do our part here in Statesboro," said Haynes. "Wal-Mart is trying to get behind personal sustainability. We're trying to help out the community anyway we can."
Brooke Carney, director of Keep Bulloch Beautiful, said waste reduction is one of their primary goals.
“We are constantly trying to find ways to make recycling more convenient for Bulloch County residents," said Carney. "The opening of this new recycling center is representative of trends we are seeing throughout the community. More and more people are participating in recycling programs.”
The new recycling center is accessible 24 hours. Residents and shoppers can recycle mixed paper, flattened cardboard, steel and aluminum cans, and plastic (types 1 and 2). In addition, shoppers can recycle their plastic bags inside each entrance to the store.
Haynes stressed the importance of getting the word out about the new facilities.
"We can really do something good here," said Haynes. "Once people get aware of the bins and we get the college students behind it, it will be really good for the community."
Residents will still need to take other recyclables — yard waste, scrap metal, motor oil, batteries etc. — to either the city dump or any of the 16 locations around the county.
