Editor:
Thank you, Mr. Burns and Mr. Barrow, for taking negative campaign tactics to a new low.
Week after week the voters of the 12th Congressional district of Georgia have suffered through the most negative political campaigning I have ever witnessed.
Do either of these politicians think that the voters of this district are so totally naive and live so far back in the woods that our level of education or level of common sense would allow anyone of us to believe this garbage they dispensed daily through the media or the never ending barrage of computer generated telephone calls and mass mailings?
The huge amounts of money spent by both candidates in this campaign on negative attacks on each other only accomplished one thing in my household. Each time an advertisement appeared on the television or on the radio, we immediately pushed the mute button on the remote control. Every time our telephone rang we would answer the call and if no one responded immediately we hung up. Campaign literature immediately went into the garbage container unread.
The time has come for every voter who has similar sentiments to speak out and let any politician campaigning for any elected office know that this is unacceptable. It will not be viewed as good policy to overwhelm our media, telephones or mailboxes using these tactics in the future.
Failing to speak out now on this issue will certainly send the message to politicians that we accept these tactics and will only guarantee that we will be seeing more and more attack ads in future campaigns filled with distortions of the truth, outright lies, selected out takes of speeches, written articles or past voting records used by both opponents against the other attempting to demonstrate how unworthy each is of our vote.
The voters of the 12th District deserve much better than we received from these candidates.
