On Wednesday, March 10, the Statesboro Noon Lions Club in conjunction with the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation and other area Lions Clubs will sponsor a mobile vision clinic.
The clinic will be held at the new Hearts and Hands Inc. Medical Clinic facility at the Son’s Light Fellowship Church, on Highway 301 South in Statesboro.
The clinic will offer dilated eye examinations and eyeglasses to uninsured Georgia residents who are at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level.  Applications are available from Statesboro Noon Lions members, the Food Bank of Statesboro, Georgia Eye Institute Statesboro and the Hearts and Hands Clinic.
Applications must be received by Saturday, March 6 and will be reviewed for eligibility. If approved, applicants will be contacted with an appointment time for the March 10 clinic.
Low-income individuals with Medicare or Medicaid may be eligible for eyeglasses through the program if they have had a recent eye examination. Applications for eyeglasses are available at the same locations.
The Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation operates Mobile Vision Clinics throughout the state, including Savannah and Brunswick. The March clinic is the first planned for the Statesboro area and was made possible by an emergency grant from the Georgia Healthcare Foundation. In 2008-2009 the Lighthouse served more than 7,500 uninsured and low-income Georgians.
The Statesboro Diabetes Support Group, in conjunction with the Savannah American Diabetes Association, also will offer blood glucose screenings at Hearts and Hands Clinic during the March 10 clinic.  Appointments are not necessary for the blood glucose screenings which is open to the public.  The screening will take place between 9 am and 2 pm.
The Hearts and Hands Clinic is Statesboro’s new free health care clinic for the medically uninsured. Call (912) 531-9752 for more information about the vision clinic.
