A Screven County sheriff’s deputy received public recognition and awards Thursday for bravery and exceptional service three years after she was shot in the line of duty. Deputy Katherine Ponder was presented with the National Sheriffs’ Association Medal of Honor at Thursday’s Sylvania Rotary club meeting for her response during a 2011 escape attempt. In a letter to Ross Mirmelstein, the director of the association’s conferences and exhibits, Screven County Sheriff Mike Kile praised Ponder’s performance as a school resource officer as well as her reaction to the escape attempt where the escapee was detained in spite of her injury.
