A Statesboro man found dead Saturday first appeared to be a victim of an automobile accident, but investigations and crime lab reports later determined his death to be suicide.
Joseph Clifton Bush, 25, University Place Apartments, was reported missing by family Thursday, according to a Statesboro Police report. Capt. Wendell Turner said Bush was entered as a missing person with the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) and lookouts were posted.
Saturday, Georgia State Patrol troopers were notified after someone reported an apparent automobile accident near the Ogeechee River bridge at the Screven/Bulloch county line on Lakeview Road, said Bulloch County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Gene McDaniel.
Upon investigation, the trooper found evidence requiring that the incident be turned over to the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Department, he said.
Bush “appeared to have shot himself” while driving and the car then ran off the road, he said.
Crime lab reports led to the ruling that Bush’s death was “suicide by firearm,” McDaniel said.
