PORTAL, Ga. -- Mrs. Peggy Allene Metzler Motes, age 75, passed away on Monday, October 23, 2023, at the Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva, North Carolina.

Peggy was born in Vidalia, Georgia, to the late Ralph Richard Metzler and Minnie Allene Gordon Metzler.

She graduated from Lyons High School in 1966.

Peggy married Larry Motes in 1967 and he soon left to serve in Vietnam.

Peggy worked with her mother in her mother’s restaurant for several years.

Following Larry’s return from military service, they resided in Hinesville for 17 months and then moved to the Westside area of Bulloch County. In 1995, they made Portal, Georgia, their home.

Peggy had worked for Valueland as a clerk, as a restaurant manager from 1977 to 1984 and as the secretary for Motes Brothers until her retirement in 2004.

She enjoyed being a grandmother following her retirement.

She was a member of the Portal United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a daughter, Rhonda Lynn; and a sister, Janis Oxford.

Peggy is survived by her husband of 56 years, Larry Wilbur Motes of Portal; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Gwen Motes of Portal; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and David Yates of Portal; three grandchildren, Brandon (Harley) Motes, Emma Yates and Katielyn Yates; one great-grandson, John Robert Motes; and a brother and sister-in-law, Glenn (Cheryl) Metzler of Vidalia.

The family will receive visitors from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 26, at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 27, at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Elder John Scott officiating. Interment will follow at Bulloch Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Nick Metzler, Dustin Harris, Earl Motes, Joe Aldrich, David Yates, and Kyle Haddock. Brandon Motes will be an honorary pallbearer.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Portal United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 401, Portal, GA 30450.
