The Bulloch Academy boys accomplished two of their pre-season goals Friday night.
They went undefeated in GISA Region 2-AA play and nabbed the top seed for the region tournament.
“The guys set a goal to go 8-0 in the region after going 0-10 last year,” said a jubilant head coach Chandler Dennard after the Gators whipped Trinity Christian School 53-25 in BA’s final regular-season game. “It proves that when a group of guys get together, set goals and work hard to accomplish those goals, good things happen.”
In the opener, the Gator girls had a strong first quarter but the Lady Crusaders were just too strong in all facets of their game as they blasted Bulloch 56-25.
Bulloch (11-13 overall, 8-0 in the region) got an 18-point performance from junior guard Will Powell and played tough zone defense to get the victory and the top seed in next week’s Region 2-AA tournament, which will be held in the Gators’ gym on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.
“You always want to be the number one seed,” said Dennard.
The Gators came out in the opening quarter with a tight zone defense which kept the Crusaders (12-8, 6-2) at bay. BA took a 9-3 lead after the first eight minutes.
In the second, three three-pointers, two from Powell and one from senior Jeremiah Masters, sparked the Gators to a 17-point quarter. Masters had seven points in the quarter to propel Bulloch to a 26-13 lead at intermission.
“The treys got us off to a good start,” said Dennard. “It’s exciting when they are going in and the momentum swings your way. It created some excitement among the players and the fans. Everybody had an extra bounce in their step.”
Coming out of the locker room in the third, the Gators felt the excitement as they turned up the heat on both offense and defense. Bulloch outscored Trinity 21-5 for a commanding 47-18 advantage.
“Our defense is going to create our offense,” said Dennard. “It did tonight.”
Senior forward Wil Hall added eight for BA while Masters had seven and senior forward James Conner added six.
The Crusaders were led by Viktor Wronowski with 11.
Another goal of the Gators is a region championship, something a BA boys’ team hasn’t done since 1992.
“We’ve still got a few more goals to accomplish,” said Dennard. “One is to cut down the nets in their own gym. We’ve got two more games to win before they can accomplish that one.”
Bulloch will play Friday at 5:30 p.m. against an undetermined foe.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Gators (11-15, 4-4) battled hard with the larger Lady Crusaders. BA’s freshman forward Heaven Hinton and Trinity’s junior forward Laine Hobbs passed some hard body shots around in the paint.
Bulloch forced TCS (21-3, 8-0) to hustle in the opening eight as the visitors took a 10-6 lead.
But it didn’t take long for Trinity to get their act in gear as the Lady Crusaders out-pointed BA 18-7 in the second stanza for a 28-13 halftime lead.
In the third, Bulloch tried to battle back but TCS opened the gap to 19 points.
Trinity forward senior Bliss McMichael had a game-high 14 points while sophomore forward Laine Hobbs added 12. Freshman guard Kelcie Jacobs paced Bulloch with nine.
