CHARLESTON, S.C. — Top-seeded UNC Greensboro swept No. 8 seed Georgia Southern, 4-0, in the second round of the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championships on Friday at the Earle Tennis Center.
UNCG earned the doubles point to take the early lead in the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The Spartans’ Annette Rios and Kayla Gammie in the No. 3 position defeated the Eagles’ Ali Beeler and Mimi Bollaci, 8-2. UNCG’s Niltooli Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty defeated GSU’s Paola Garrido and Caitlin Kitchen, 8-3.
The Spartans carried over the momentum into singles play as Dougherty earned the second point for UNCG, defeating Alessandra Dzuba in the No. 5 position, 6-0, 6-0. Stephanie Falcon earned the third point for the Spartans with a victory in the No. 6 slot over Natalie Maffett in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. The final point was netted by Alex Whitehead over Beeler, 6-1, 6-4, in the No. 2 position.
UNCG advances to a matchup today against the winner of the No. 4-seed Samford and No.5-seed Chattanooga match at Patriots Point at 1 p.m. The Spartans improve to 17-5, while GSU concludes its season with a 5-15 record.
GSU men's tennis season ends
CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Samford Bulldogs beat Georgia Southern, 4-1, to advance to the semifinals of the 2012 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Championships on Friday.
After capturing the doubles point, the Bulldogs picked up points at the top three positions of the order to claim the win.
The Bulldogs (16-4) scored wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to earn the point. GSU struck first in doubles play as Alain Garrido and Andrew Dromsky beat Alexander Sajonz and Zac Dunkle at No. 1, 8-4. Carson Kadi and Fernando Costa beat Derrick Davison and Daniel Rush, 8-4, at No. 3, while Ryan Shidler and Elliot Barnwell beat Matthijs Verdam and Kyle Hoffman, 8-3, at No. 2 to seal the point for Samford.
Samford picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to push ahead, 3-0. Dunkle beat Garrido, 6-2, 6-1, at the top of the lineup before Kadi topped Dromsky in straight sets (6-4, 6-3).
GSU (3-20) got on the board when Albert Codina Sala beat Garrison Laduca, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6.
Elliot Barnwell then topped Kyle Hoffman, 6-3, 6-1, to clinch the match for Samford.

Georgia Southern's track and field team is competing in the Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship today and Sunday in Cullowhee, N.C.
The Eagles are ranked fourth in the SoCon outdoor track and field midseason power rankings.
GSU's Hammock wins award
Georgia Southern Football staffer Matthew Hammock has been named the 2011-12 Football Championship Subdivision Video Coordinator of the Year by the Collegiate Sports Video Association. Hammock was selected for this award by a vote of his peers within the FCS. The award recognizes a video coordinator who displays excellent work and performance.
Hammock is in his sixth year at GSU, his alma mater, and third as video coordinator for the football program. He served as assistant video coordinator from 2008-09 before being promoted in 2010.
The award makes Hammock a finalist for the Bob Matey National Video Coordinator of the Year award, which is presented to the video coordinator who displays innovation, determination, perseverance, and technical skill as portrayed by the late Bob Matey, legendary video coordinator from Texas A&M.
The conference and National Video Coordinator of the Year Awards will be presented during the 18th annual Collegiate Sports Video Conference, May 14-17, in Indianapolis, Ind.
