SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas — Georgia Southern led 36-24 at halftime and held the advantage by as many as 16 in the first 20 minutes, but Chicago State never went away as the Eagles dropped a 64-59 game Friday afternoon in the South Padre Island Invitational.
The Eagles (2-4) trailed late 62-59, and Jelani Hewitt's 3-point attempt with four seconds remaining hit back iron as Chicago State (2-5) got the ball back to hit a pair of free throws that were good for the final margin.
The Cougars hit 92 percent of their free throws in the contest.
The Eagles have not won a non-conference road game since they beat Houston 65-63 on November 10, 2008.
