CHARLESTON, S.C. - Georgia Southern (15-10, 6-3) jumped out to an early 3-1 after the third inning and added four insurance runs in the eighth inning to earn its first road series win against the College of Charleston (16-9, 3-3) since the 2001 season. The win also marked the 500th career victory for Head Baseball Coach Rodney Hennon. Hennon earned 419 of those wins at GSU and picked up the first 81 at his alma mater, Western Carolina.
Andy Moye (Alpharetta, Ga.) went the distance for the Eagles to record his first career complete game on a career-high 130 pitches. Moye faced 34 batters and held the Cougars to just one run on six hits. The senior captain struck out eight and walked four for his third win of the season.
Matt Pegler was tagged with the loss after allowing six hits and three runs over the first three innings of the game. Nick Osterman pitched in relief of Pegler and allowed just two runs in 4.1 innings of work.
Eric Phillips (Carrollton, Ga.) extended his hit streak to 18 games with a base hit in the first inning, but Steve Cochrane's (Mooresville, N.C.) reached-base streak came to end. Cochrane had reached in every game this season, but went 0-4 on Sunday. His sacrifice fly plated Shawn Payne (Stone Mountain, Ga.) in the third inning.
Georgia Southern opened the scoring with a run in the second inning, before Charleston tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. A leadoff walk of Victor Roache (Ypsilanti, Mich.) came around to score on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Morgan (Evans, Ga.). Brent Pugh (Atlanta, Ga.) also laid down a bunt in the inning for a base hit.
The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the third inning on Cochrane's sacrifice fly and a triple by Roache. Payne led off the inning with a double and was moved to third base on a single by Michael Burruss (Marietta, Ga.). A fly out to right field drove in the first run of the inning before Roache's triple scored the second.
Georgia Southern nearly batted around in the eighth inning to score four runs and put the game out of reach with a 7-1 lead. Roache and Tom Richardson (Lilburn, Ga.) led off the inning with base hits before Pugh dropped his second bunt of the game, moving both runners into scoring position. The Cougars nearly got out of the inning without any damage after a fielder's choice erased a runner at home plate for the second out of the inning. However, back-to-back two RBI singles by Payne and Burruss plated the four runs.
The Eagles continue their four-game road trip on Tuesday, March 29th, at Jacksonville at 6:30 p.m. before returning home for a Southern Conference series with The Citadel this upcoming weekend.
