Georgia Southern head football coach Chris Hatcher said Monday he and his staff are close to finalizing a depth chart by the ned of the week. Unto this point, GSU’s positional rankings have yet to be determined, and Hatcher has made each athlete turn his jersey inside out to symbolize not one spot on the squad has been earned.
Hatcher spoke about the depth chart and the quarterback position after Monday’s session, the Eagles’ ninth of the spring.
“It’s kind of up and down right now,” said the first-year GSU coach. “(Travis Clark) is still the solid No. 1 guy and (Kyle) Collins has been the back-up (at quarterback), but today I thought that (Chris) Griffin and (Jeremiah) Enloe made some strides. We’ll play that out throughout the course of the week leading up to the scrimmage on Saturday.”
While Clark and Collins have shown the ability to be pocket passers this spring, it’s Griffin and Enloe who have become scramblers behind center. Both Griffin and Enloe did their fare share of escape acts during Monday’s workout.
Saturday’s scrimmage will be the second of the spring for GSU and Hatcher said he hopes things continue running smoothly.
“We’ll we’re just basically going to continue to do what we started,” he said. “We need some guys to step up at all the positions and hopefully solidify the 1s and the 2s.”
As for filling out the depth chart, Hatcher said it’s as easy as 1-2-3.
“The best players are No.1 and the next best are No. 2 — all the way down the line.”
Rogers impresses
Chris Rogers, a sophomore out of Athens, Ga., switched to the defensive side of the ball this spring. Rogers was listed at quarterback in 2006, but has moved into the defensive backfield with former running back Chris Covington. Hatcher said the 6-foot-1, 200 pound Rogers has been “a surprise” for the Eagles and commended the entire secondary on their good work.
Kicking concerns
It’s no secret to Eagle fans that GSU struggled in the kicking game in 2006. It’s not lost on Hatcher, either.
“We’re just very inconsistent — it’s the entire operation that’s inconsistent,” Hatcher said. “We’re working on that everyday. We spend ten minutes on kicking field goals and extra points every single day.”
Injury report
Redshirt-freshman tight end Michael Veal suffered an ACL injury and will miss the 2007 season. Sophomore linebacker Harland Bower tore his triceps muscle and could miss up to six months. Junior defensive lineman Matt Wise suffered a foot injury and will miss the rest of spring practice.
