On Wednesday at the Georgia Southern campus, former Liverpool standout Steve Heighway — the director of the Liverpool FC Academy that grooms youth soccer players and has trained five players on the current Liverpool squad — will be in Statesboro to put on a series of clinics that will help develop the skills of both future and current soccer coaches as well as current players both at the prep and collegiate levels. Heighway will bring assistant Garreth Evans and three others to coach during the clinics.
The day will begin with two sessions available to GSU students. Undergraduate students majoring in coaching education will have a clinic, followed by a presentation for students in graduate programs for sports psychology and coaching education.
Starting at 3 p.m. the clinics will be open to the public. Heighway will use the Georgia Southern men’s soccer team to give a one-hour demonstration of coaching at the collegiate and elite levels, and will do the same at 4 p.m. with the GSU women’s team. These clinics will be open to the public, and the coaches will be wearing microphones so the public can hear them as they give the clinic.
The night session, which will be conducted at Paulson Stadium, is for the benefit of coaches at the high school level and select youth teams. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. Heighway will be available to all coaches in attendance to answer questions regarding coaching and player development at the prep level.
The motivation of the clinics started because of Georgia Southern’s involvement with the International Learning Community and I-NET. Students and faculty have gone back and fourth between England and the United States studying and teaching abroad. Liverpool does a lot of work with the International Learning Community, and the relationship began to develop.
The Georgia Southern College of Health and Human Science, the College of Education and the Department of Health and Kinesiology used this relationship to put the series of clinics together.
Heighway will be bringing plenty of credentials with him to Statesboro. He has represented his country during the World Cup and has won numerous championships including titles in the FA Cup, European Cup, UEFA Cup and Football League Cup. As director at Liverpool Academy his teams won titles in 1996 and 2006.
