Spring football time

It’s really against everything I stand for to write this column, seeing as we’re right in the middle of college baseball season, still checking out the high school soccer fields and watching the prep diamonds. But in the South, football is king and I kneel before thee.
Georgia Southern starts spring practice this Friday under new head coach Chris Hatcher. Getting worked up over spring football is like losing your cookies after that first lotto number hits: settle down, nothing has happened yet.
So while nothing “major” will be happening over these next few weeks, it will give fans a chance to check out this thing they call the “Hatch Attack”.
Hatcher’s offense will be in its simplest forms leading up to the annual Blue-White Game on Saturday, April 21. New weapons will be tested, programmed, blown up and tested again. If that doesn’t appeal in the South, I don’t know what will.
Fans will also undoubtedly have their eyes on the quarterback position. Although 2006 starter Travis Clark returns to the team, the battle for the starting position is likely wide open.
Chris Griffin, who wowed thrill seekers in the spring of 2006 (before losing eligibility) is back on the roster and could work if the Hatch-man is looking for a mobile signal caller. Kyle Collins (from Atlanta) and Jeremiah Enloe (from Fayetteville) will be in the mix as well.
Jayson Foster, the “Holy-Heck-did-you-just-see-that” wide receiver, kick returner, running back and decoy has reportedly expressed his non-interest in returning under center. Something tells me we’ll see him at QB a few times anyway.
With all the attention focused on the offense, not much has been said about the defensive side of the ball (maybe it’s the “Hatch Sneak Attack”). Perhaps over these next few weeks,  fans can start to patch together what things will look like when Southern doesn’t have the ball.
Am I leaving anything else out? Probably. But in keeping with this spring practice thing, I don’t want to violate any NCAA violations by writing anymore than I’m supposed to.
