The wins have been rolling in for the Bulloch Academy girls all season, but their latest victory is the school’s biggest in 32 years.
Saturday afternoon, senior Haley Burke led the Lady Gators with 19 points as Bulloch defeated Westminster, 42-30, to clinch the GISA Region 4-AAA championship — the school’s first since 1980.
Burke has been a rock for the Gators all season and was their leading scorer in Saturday’s win. She caught fire early and had her outside jumper working throughout the evening as the Gators pulled ahead early and held off Westminster until the final buzzer.
Mired in a tough region, winning on the road has been one of the few problems the Gators (23-5) have encountered all season.
“We know that we’re a good team and that we can defend our home court,” Burke said before the tournament. “We just need to be able to beat others on their court.”
Those words turned out to be perfect foreshadowing as Westminster — which hosted the tournament and had defeated Bulloch Academy in the Gators’ trip to Augusta during the regular season — had no answers for Burke and her teammates.
