Bulloch Academy seniors Win Lee and Walker Blitch were named to the preseason All-State by the 2011 Georgia Dugout Club Preview Magazine.
The magazine, published by former Statesboro Herald sportswriter Tim Morse, is a comprehensive look at the top teams and top players in all leagues, divisions and classifications of Georgia high school baseball.
Lee and Blitch were honored in the preview of Georgia Independent School Association’s Class AAA after they had superior seasons last year in Class AA.
Lee, a shortstop, was tied for second in home runs (six) and was in the top 15 in batting average (.420) among the GISA’s three classifications. Blitch, a pitcher, had the sixth-best earned run average in the GISA and has won 12 games in two seasons. Both were named All-State and All-Region in 2010.
The Gator duo were also selected as ‘Players To Watch’ in GISA Region 4-AAA.
Metter pitcher Pete Nagel and Claxton pitcher Michael Peel were chosen as preseason All-State for GHSA Class A.
Lady Devils win 10th straight
SPRINGFIELD — The Statesboro Lady Blue Devils won for the 10th time in a row as they defeated Effingham County 65-41 on the road Tuesday.
The Devils (19-3, 8-0 Region 2B-AAAA) were led by Alisia Jenkins (13 points) and Shanikwa Buie (12 points).
The road trip continues Friday as Statesboro faces Greenbrier at 6 p.m.
Bulloch JV sweeps RTCA
LYONS — Bulloch Academy took a pair from Robert Toombs Christian Academy in middle-school basketball action Saturday.
In girls’ action, the Lady Gators won their 11th straight by downing the Lady Crusaders 39-25.
Ashley Burke netted 16 points in the victory, Page Spence added eight and Pate Lomax had seven. Margaret Wolfe led RTCA with 13.
In the boys’ game, the Gators (9-2) whipped RTCA 51-37. Will Marsh pumped in 20 points while Smith Reeves had 15.
Both Gator squads head into this week’s East Georgia Middle School tournament at David Emanuel Academy in Stillmore as the top-seeded teams.
The BA girls take the court Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday’s Thomas Jefferson and Robert Toombs matchup. The BA boys play at 7:45 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday’s Thomas Jefferson and Robert Toombs game.
In C-team girls’ action Saturday morning, BA lost to both David Emanuel and Robert Toombs. In the opener, Abigail Smith scored four points as the Lady Gators lost 13-7 to DEA. In the second game, Smith again had four points as BA lost 20-12 to Robert Toombs.
Tigers stop Savannah Christian
CLAXTON — The Claxton Tigers (14-4, 7-1 Region 3A-A) took down region rival Savannah Christian 72-46 at home Tuesday.
LaBron Glover was the leading scorer with 19 points. Rashod Lovett added 18 points for the Tigers, and Venas Moore finished with 14.
The Tigers were in control throughout the contest, and led 41-25 at the break.
Claxton travels to Savannah Country Day Friday at 7:30 p.m.
SCPS tops Claxton girls
CLAXTON — The Claxton Lady Tigers fell 65-52 to Savannah Christian Tuesday at home.
Polly Murray led the Tigers with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Claxton faces Savannah Country Day Friday at 6 p.m. in Savannah.
SEB Hall of Fame nominations
Southeast Bulloch is now receiving Athletic Hall Of Fame nominations for the April 30th 2011 Hall Of Fame Banquet.
Nomination forms can be downloaded from the school’s athletic web site or you can pick up forms at the high school attendance office. The deadline to submit forms is February 25, 2011.
Semipro football tryouts
The East Georgia Rebels, a semipro football team in the Georgia Developmental Football League, will hold tryouts Feb. 5 at Mill Creek Park.
The fee for the tryout is $30. Registration takes place from noon-1 p.m. the day of the tryouts, and the tryout itself will last from 1 p.m.-4 p.m.
