SEB hosts Mustangs

BROOKLET — One week after nearly upsetting eighth ranked Pierce County, the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets will look to build off of their first game as they host the Mustangs of South Effingham tonight.
Pat Collins, SEB’s head coach, said his team did some things well in their first game, but inconsistency plagued the Yellow Jackets and that’s something he’s hoping his team can correct tonight.
“If you’re not playing someone of the caliber of Pierce County or South Effingham, you might be able to gloss over those mistakes because you can win the game,” Collins said.
Southeast Bulloch (0-1) will look to slow down a South Effingham offense that put up 45 points last week against Jenkins. The Mustangs (1-0) are led by senior running back Patrick Brown who ran for 257 yards and three touchdowns in week one.
“They run a wing-T offense from the shotgun,” Collins said. “They’re very diverse and very big up front.”
The Yellow Jacket offense, meanwhile, will once again look to their solid running game to lead the way. That offense garnered 443 total yards in the first week despite what Collins described as inconsistent play from the offensive line.
Another factor in tonight’s game could be depth. The Mustangs are an AAAAA school and have 91 players listed on their roster while the Yellow Jackets, playing in class AAA, only have 76 players listed.
Collins said that as the Yellow Jackets have become more successful over the years, it’s become a little more challenging to fill their schedule. Some teams, he said, didn’t want to face the Yellow Jackets this year and after talking with the coaches at South Effingham, both realized that a matchup between the two schools would be mutually beneficial.
“This is a tough task for use this week, there’s no doubt about that,” Collins said. “But it’s a non-region game so win, lose or draw it’s going to help us with the stretch run of our season. Obviously we want to go out and win the game.”
To do that, Collins said, the Yellow Jackets are going to have to be solid on every play.
“We’ve got to control the things we can control which is how hard we play, how technically sound we play, how we execute, how consistent we are.”
He said they’ve tried to simulate game situations in practice to improve with their consistency, but there’s really only one way to learn.
“I think the more experience you gain, that’s where the growth occurs,” he said. “That’s why there’s so much growth, not just for our team, but for every team, early in the season is because kids are getting that experience.”
Kickoff is set for 7:30 at Fred Shaver Field in Brooklet.
