Southeast Bulloch boys soccer romps Groves 6-3

Six different players scored for Southeast Bulloch and the Yellow Jackets defeated Groves High, 6-3, Thursday at Garden City Stadium.
    SEB improves to 2-3-2, 2-2 in Region 3-AAA play. South Effingham visits Fred Shaver Field in Brooklet tonight for a non-region game at 7 against Southeast.
    After a defensive breakdown allowed Groves to take a 1-0 lead two minutes into the game, Andrew Cribbs leveled the score five minutes later when the Groves goalie couldn’t handle his free kick from just outside the penalty area. Three minutes later, Evan Heidler put the Yellow Jackets ahead for good with a rocket form just outside the 18 that bounced into the goal off the goalie’s hands.
    Andrew Kalaani, playing his second game back from injury, was able to spilt two defenders 10 minutes before halftime and punch a shot into the goal to give SEB a 3-1 lead at the break.
    Evan Schlierf gave Southeast a three-goal cushion three minutes into the second half, when he headed in a corner kick from Cribbs just over the goalie for a 4-1 lead.
    After Groves cut the lead in half, Desmond Porter restored it with a header, again off a long throw in by Alan Luther. Kyle Edwards made it 6-2 with 15 minutes to play, finishing a cross from Kalaani into the left corner of the goal.
    SEB (2-3-2) will come back home to face South Effingham (3-2-1) in Brooket tomorrow at 7:00.

Portal picks up
first win in
school history
    The Portal Lady Panthers picked up their first win in program history Thursday night with a 3-2 win over Claxton.
    Madison Miles scored two goals to put Portal up 2-0, then after Claxton netted a goal to make it 2-1 Carrie McGahee slammed home the third goal to put the Panthers ahead for good.
    “I’m really proud of our team today, we learned a lot from our first game this year,” said assistant coach Matt Haddock. “It was a great day for the Portal community.”
    The Portal boys lost in a mercy rule in the second part of the double-header 10-0, but it didn’t overshadow the girls picking up a program milestone.
    The girls (1-1) will travel to Claxton Tuesday for their next game while the boys (0-1) will face Montgomery County this evening at 5:00 p.m. 

Bulloch Academy boys tennis stays undefeated
    The Bulloch Academy Tennis teams squared off against Trinity-Dublin Thursday night to see the boys prevail in back-to-back sweeps and the girls fall in consecutive 2-3 matches.
    Jake Wasden, Phillip Brannen scored back-to-back wins in the boys singles while both doubles teams of Seth Conner-Chad Lanier and Harrison Deal-Stone Thomas also scored consecutive victories.
    For the girls, the doubles teams of Bryan Boykin-Lizzie Kauber and Victoria Maxwell-Annastin Johnson scored wins in both of their matches.
    The Gator boys (3-0, 2-0) and girls (0-3, 0-2) will pick play back up at Robert Toombs on Tuesday.

Gator baseball wins on the road
    In a game that was scheduled at the last minute, Bulloch Academy had no problem hitting the road in Sanderville to pull out a 3-1 win against Brentwood Thursday night.
    Jake Nelson and Walker Hennon each had an RBI, with Hennons coming off a triple. The triple was one of Hennon’s two hits, while leadoff man Don Aaron had three.
    Nathan Rice picked up the win as the starter, throwing four and a third innings while allowing just one hit, one unearned run and striking out three batters.
    BA (4-1) will start region play Tuesday when they face Pinewood in Statesboro at 4:00 p.m.  

Southeast Bulloch ladies shutout Groves soccer
    Southeast Bulloch’s girls soccer team ran Groves off their own field in a 10-0 romp Thursday night.
    Emily Barnard kept her scoring streak alive by netting four goals and adding an assist. Gracie Thompson, Sarah Clark added two goals each while Cole Robertson and Arley Villegas each had a goal as well.
    Thompson would notch two assists, while Clark and Robertson would each add assists too.
    SEB (4-3) will head home tonight to face South Effingham at 5:00.

Bulloch Academy soccer swept on the road
    The BA soccer teams remain winless through two matches this season after both boys and girls teams were downed 2-0 by Trinity Dublin Thursday night. 
    The BA boys (0-1-1) and girls (0-2) will face Hilton Head Christian Academy next on Monday with the girls set to kick at 4:00 and the boys at 6:00.

Magic Show 
tournament to be held this weekend
    The 4th Annual Magic Show presented by the Statesboro Magic will take place this weekend at Georgia Southern's RAC facility. 
    On Saturday and Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. — 55 teams from grades 4-12, with teams from as far Fayetteville, NC will compete in a tournament. These games feature local players with area middle and high school programs.  The host team, the Statesboro Magic is made up of 9th grade boys from SHS, SEB, and South Effingham. The cost of admission is $10.

WJMS baseball picks up
another win
    William James Baseball team defeated Richmond Hill 5-2 Wednesday afternoon in Richmond Hill.
    Dake Williams pitched 4 innings without giving up a run and striking out seven batters. Hunter Saussey pitched 2 and a third innings and struck out 5 batters. In the bottom of the 7th Richmond Hill loaded the bases and Saussey had to leave the game following a collision at the plate.
    Thomas Ponder came in and picked up the save by getting the final two outs. Ponder also added an RBI single. Mason Hudgens had a two-run double in the 1st inning.
    Will Yawn contributed with an RBI and scored 2 runs. William James did not commit a single error defensively and were lead defensively by Ames Rackleff and Grae Haralson.
    William James is 2-1 in region play and host Effingham on Monday at 4:30 at Luetta Moore Field.
