Area teams take first step to state

    A quest for a state championship in basketball begins today, with area teams beginning play in their respective region tournaments. The teams who survive to the final four of region tourney play qualify for the state tournament which begins on Feb. 23.
    The Statesboro boys team were granted a first-round home game by earning the region’s No. 2 seed. They’ll open play Wednesday when they host Brunswick. The Lady Blue Devils conceded the region’s third seed when a coin toss determined their fate Friday night after beating the Academy of Richmond County. They’ll travel to Waycross today to face Ware County at 6 p.m. The semifinals and finals will be hosted by ARC, who beat the Statesboro boys Friday night, 53-52.
    The entire region 3-AA tournament will be hosted by Josey in Augusta. It’s there that the boys teams of Screven County and Southeast Bulloch begin play today. The Gamecocks draw Jefferson County at 5:30 p.m., while the Yellow Jackets play the nightcap against No. 1 seed Swainsboro at 8:30 p.m. On Wednesday, the Metter Tigers face host school Josey at 8:30 p.m.
    On the girls side of the bracket, Metter plays Laney today at 7 p.m., SEB faces Swainsboro Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., and the Lady Gamecocks take on Jefferson County at 7 p.m. the same day.
    Savannah Country Day School will welcome all of region 3-A starting Wednesday. Both Portal teams play on Wednesday, with the Lady Panthers facing Jenkins County at 4 p.m., and the boys playing Claxton at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Tigers of Claxton draw Emanuel County Institute for a 6 p.m. game on Thursday while the JCHS boys’ squad faces host SCD at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
    Finally, Bulloch Academy will host the GISA region 2-AA tournament. The Gators play Friday at 5 p.m. with the Lady Gators to follow at 7:30 p.m.
